Activities

There are lots of different things to do in and around Oughterard. It is primarily known for its fishing, with anglers visiting from all over the world, but it also offers other persuits, from leisurely strolls to a round of golf.

Fishing

Lough Corrib has a big international reputation for its fine brown trout fishing, particularly during the Mayfly season (Usually Mid-may to the beginning of June) when surface feeding fish are particularly prolific. Click on the image to the right to see a mayfly up close. The season begins on February the 15th, and lasts until the end of September. Weather conditions can be cold or stormy for the first couple of months, though this does not stop fish from taking. The lake is home to a variety of species, including trout, pike, perch, roach, rudd, and eel. The average size for a trout is under 1 kg- however, big fish are common, with huge specimens weighing up to 10kg possible. Also possible are salmon, who are known to bite as they return to the Corrib system to spawn after years in the Atlantic Ocean. A limit of 13'', or 32.5cm, is imposed as the minimum length of caught brown trout. Many anglers follow a 'catch-and-release' practice, as part of efforts to sustain the fish populations.

Golfing

About 1.5km from the Boat Inn is a quality 18-hole golf course- The Oughterard Golf Club combines a new club house with mature, well-maintained grounds. Clubs, trolleys, and Caddys are available. Handicap certificates are required. Watch out for some tricky holes on the back nine!
